Sunny Day Tea Party by KrisCynical Sunny Day Tea Party by KrisCynical
This is the latest assignment in my Advanced Computer Illustration class, a self promotional piece. This would be used as a postcard to mail out to people.

Not much more to say... just a "hey, look at me, I do children's imagry!". Oh yes, and that's Isabelle Maria from my character design sheet last year.

Illustrator CS2
Photoshop CS2

EDIT (2/23/07): Changed the color of the window pane dividers because I overlooked that originally. Also added a drop shadow to my logo so it's a little easier to read, although it still needs tweaking.

Interesting. No offense meant but you're the up-teenth person I've seen coming out of college on an Art Degree who's portfolio has alot of 'Disney-esk' cartoon style illsutrations. Do these colleges prep students for admission to Disney Studios? Just curious.

*ahem*

Anyway, I love the color selection of soft pastel colors. Reminds me of Easter. Great work on the shadows

No, they don't. Actually there were two people out of my 75 person Illustration class who had a more western-influenced illustration style, and mine was completely recognizable in comparison to hers. They don't prep students for Disney admission by any means, but Disney does recruit people from Ringling. There's a wide variety of style throughout each year of students.

...and that did seem a little offensive.

Ah. Well, I'm sorry it wasn't meant to be offensive. It was just an observation I have noticed recently. In many ways it is a compliment. Disney's portfolio restrictions are the toughest in the business. I know, I tried. It takes an insane amount of talent to be considered. All I was pointing out is that you seem to have that talent. All I wanted to know is if it was you or the program that made the influence. :D

Oh, okay... I'm sorry, then. I just wasn't sure how to take that since I was one of two in my class that actually had that kind of influenced style, and honestly nobody's ever said that to me before. : P And yes, they ARE strict... when they were reviewing portfolios this past year they told us if we were going to put any Disney characters in our portfolio for them, which we could, we had better get them EXACTLY on model or they didn't want to see them. >_>

No problem :)

Yeah....that sounds like Disney alright. I tried to apply for a position back almost 10 years ago. They sent me all the information regarding the portfolio requirements, which were tough...BUT...it was the over all career path they laid out that made me change my mind:

Phase 1: Inbetween / Clean up work for the first 5 to 7 years.
Phase 2: Inbetween work on Hands and Feet for 5 years.
Phase 3: Inbetween work on Faces for 5 years. (By this point you'll have been with Disney for almost 20 or more years!) :omg:
Phase 4: Minor Character Animation for 5 years.
Phase 5: Major or Key Character Animation for....ever....until you move on to Directing, producing, or managing.

I urge you to check out the 'sepcial features' on any major Disney Animation movie. You'll notice the Key animators are at the youngest 35-38 and as much as 50+ years old. :omg:

You work at Disney....you're there for a life time. ;)

All I wanted to do (and still do) was be a pre-production character designer. That seemed like such fun :boogie:

Oh, I don't know; her eyes don't seem to be in the same high, and her left cheek is a little too chubby...maybe it’s the overall face symmetry… but hey, you're one of the best artists around here, don't get me wrong;)

I draw on normal paper and pencil, scan that in, use Illustrator for the linework and base coloring and then I export it to Photoshop for shading/rendering.

What was the assignment that you did? I think the whole idea is a ratehr cool idea. I had one wwher ewe made postcards off a design based off of a designer we had picked from a hat. I got Phillip Johnson.

But did there had to be so many details....

We had to do a self promotional piece. The prof told us to find some illustrators who were working in the field we wanted to go in and see what they do for self promotion... all of the children's book illustrators I wrote to answered saying they use postcards to direct people to their websites. So that's what I did.

Still, that is a cool idea. I might have to try something simliar maybe on a business card level.

The ones I did unfortunately in college would have promoted the artist. Not the designer of it.
