I guess this is fanart since it's a jacket for a book...?

This one is going to take a bit of explaining. This is for our latest Illustration project, which was choosing a book we've read any time during our lives and making a cover for it. One of my classes this semester has been Children's Lit, and we recently had to read Lois Lowry's The Giver. Seeing as how I really liked the book, I decided to use it for my project. For those of you who have read it, you don't need to read the summary I'm about to give.

If you haven't read the book and don't want to know what all it's about, skip this.

The book takes place sometime in the future when people live in communities. "Sameness" has been put in place for generations, to where everything is uniform, orderly, and controlled. People don't see color, the land around them is flat with uniform buildings and plants, they don't know what animals are, and the weather is always 72 degrees and sunny. Once members of the community are old enough to have "stirrings" (aka sexual desires) they're given medication that makes the urge disappear. Marriages are applied for and matched up by the community's committee, and each family gets one male and one female child which they apply for if they want them. Each member of the community is assigned a job at the age of 12 by the committee, and they can't do anything else except that. Books aren't allowed except for those used in school and the book of community rules which is in every household. Every household has the same pieces of furniture and are built in the exact same way. Everything is structured to the point that members of the community never make choices and are never stressed because everything is taken care of for them so they don't have to think and therefore are safe from making mistakes. This is all they've ever known.

In the community there is an elder called The Giver who retains all the memories of what the world was like before Sameness was taken over. Jonas, a child of the community, is assigned to be the new Receiver. He then starts going to The Giver who transfers all of the memories of the world into him. The memories range from pleasant things like sledding down a hill in the snow and sailing on the ocean to horrible experiences of pain, death, war and destruction. As he receives these memories, he begins to see the community around him in color.

Now, on to the illustration. I wanted to use The Giver for this project because I wanted to play with the concept of black and white vs. color. The concept of this piece is to contrast the world of the community vs. the world that Jonas discovers through The Giver. I used the memory of sailing on the ocean because I thought I'd be able to get the most brilliant color from a marine sunset. The female figure represents Jonas's female friend, Fiona, who causes him to have his first stirring and thus first dose of the suppressant medication, and generally represents the whole aspect of having such base instincts suppressed for the sake of control. The darker gradients at the top and bottom of the piece are for text placement of the title and author.

I absolutely adored this book as a grade schooler and could not think of a better way to illustrate it. You portrayed exactly what you intended and very well at that. Definate Fav!!!

sorry... too much to read ;P

I don't know if it is original or not... but I like this work :)

Wow, the picture makes much more sense with your summary. I've never read The Giver, but it reminds me insanely of Ayn Rand's "Anthem". You say it's children's lit, huh? Well, I might just read it. I love the color range, especially against such a black and white blackground. The contrast gets even better with the jagged edges of the background and the smooth curves of the figure and the soft clouds. That's sweet how the horizon line stays the same in color and the black and white parts. *heart*

I remember that book. I'm pretty sure it changed my life. But it's awesome, whether it did or not. Lois Lowry was always a favorite of mine as a kid.

WOAH!! :jawdrop:
THIS is amazing!! The Giver is one of my all-time favorite books, and I think this illustration captures it very well. I like how the horizons line up in the bw/color, and also how Fiona is round while the background houses/path are very angular. Great contrast, job well done, definite :+favlove:!

I saw it and thought "...what book does this remind me of" but I read that book about 6? 7? years ago? Oh such great memories... thanks for giving them back to me...

Oh my GOD! I love it O_O Geeze, I haven't read "The Giver" since 8th grade, but I remeber how much I loved the book. This should have been the actual book cover, it's just too fitting to the story. It would catch a person's eye and it tells a crucial point in the book, without giving away the story or spoiling it in any way. The design is just perfect. Gotta fav :D

Wonderful job! To fav.

Your description of the Giver sounds a lot like the movie "Pleasantville", where the whole town is "Perfect" and "same" also seen in b&w, and sex also is not talked about or allowed except if your married. (but there is no passion anywhere)

It also reminds me of the book "The Anthem" by Ayn Rand, if you liked the giver I think you'd like this one (it' very short ) basically it also takes place in the future, so much so that everyone has entered into a time of "Equality" to such a point there is no freedom, no love- nothing that exists in the modern world ( for example they use candles for light).
